Microsoft has announced that it plans to retire Windows Live Messenger in favour of Skype, according to a blog post on the latter’s website. The software giant had acquired the popular VoIP service last year and a merger of the two IM clients was therefore imminent. It was reported earlier that around 80% of all IMs sent over Skype are being handled by Messenger backend. It is likely that the VoIP feature of Skype, which is something that Microsoft’s IM client missed, enabled the former to retain its existence, rather than being swallowed by the latter. The plan is to slowly phase out Live Messenger over the next few months with a complete phase-out happening by March 2013, with the notable exclusion of mainland China. Users of the IM client can move to Skype during this period using the same login credentials.

Launched on the 22nd of July, 1999, Windows Live Messenger enjoyed pole position for a number of years when only a few competitors such as Yahoo! Messenger were around. Voice and video calling between computers was one of its main attractions in addition to text chat. However, the entry of Google‘s client and browser-based IM service managed to sweep away a sizeable number of users soon after it was launched a little over seven years ago. Probably to counter this new kid on the block, Microsoft and Yahoo! launched interoperability between their two IM clients to allow users from one service to chat using the other’s client. Facebook Chat interoperability has also been supported since September, 2010. Nevertheless, it seems that the IM client finally decided that now is a good time to take a bow. Windows Live Messenger was reported to have over 330 million active users in 2009, although the number is now dropped to somewhere around 100 million.

How many of you use Windows Live Messenger as your primary IM client? Do you think this is a good move by Microsoft?

ComScore released the list of the 50 most visited sites in the US as part of its report on monthly analysis of U.S. web properties activity. ComScore is the leader in estimating World Wide Web traffic to top websites and releases monthly reports on the most visited websites across the world.

The 50 most visited US sites list (PDF download) is available from their website and it shows the following top websites.

It comes as no surprise that Google and it’s related web properties are the most visited websites in the US. Facebook holds an enviable fourth most visited position, even more than sites like Amazon, Apple and eBay, and far far above Twitter and LinkedIn. MySpace still seems to be holding in the top 50 list (the new MySpace might make it promising), while the surprise new entry is Pinterest, which shows the growing popularity and traffic of this new social media service.

I hope you have already seen the Google’s 1000 most-visited sites on the web. Which website you expected to feature on this list and it’s not there?

Eight years ago, when I first saw Firefox posted on a message board that I frequented, I thought it was so cool that someone was trying to make a new browser. The post was flamed to death with all sorts of negative comments about how Microsoft’s Internet Explorer was the best there was and Mozilla was never going to be able to compete with Microsoft. Fortunately, Mozilla didn’t see comments like that and decide to throw in the towel. Because of that, the Firefox team at Mozilla are able to celebrate 8 years of development today.

If you take a look back, you can absolutely see how Firefox was directly responsible for some of the major changes in how we use the web today. Firefox made a name for itself by being something that was so much better than Internet Explorer at the time that the only reason IE was used was to install Firefox. The team has even gone so far recently as to poke fun back at Internet Explorer 10‘s release. The browser has grown with the intention of delivering a web experience that “put people first” as they put it. Now, 8 years later, Firefox has absolutely become a staple in the web ecosystem.

Firefox now exists on Windows, it’s a default browser in many versions of Linux, OSX, and now Android as well. On each platform they support, Mozilla strives to offer the open web standards and practices that the company has dedicated themselves to from the beginning. With a global browser market share that hovers just behind Internet Explorer by a few percent, it’s not hard to imagine that Firefox will be around for a long time. Happy Birthday Firefox!

Samsung’s going to get its day in court once more, and yet again, more than a billion dollars potentially hang in the balance. Yesterday, Judge Lucy Koh agreed to “consider the questions” posed about Apple vs Samsung jury foreman Velvin Hogan’s alleged misconduct as part of a wider-reaching December 6th hearing.

The South Korean company claims Hogan failed to disclose that Seagate, Hogan’s former employer and a key Samsung business partner, slapped him with a lawsuit following a personal bankruptcy back in 1993. Samsung says the lack of disclosure prevented its lawyers from probing Hogan about potential biases and conflicting interests.

Hogan says that jury candidates were only asked for hard details about litigation that occurred in the past decade, not twenty years gone. He finds Samsung’s supposed ignorance of his past hard to swallow and publicly posed the question as to whether or not the Korean company allowed him on the jury as some sort of contingency plan: a possible way to gain a mistrial if things went badly in court.

CNET notes that Hogan in fact mentioned being embroiled in past litigation as part of the jury screening process, even if he didn’t mention Seagate specifically. The lawyers consulted by that website said that Koh is highly unlikely to overturn the $1 billion verdict because of Hogan’s actions.

Apple’s lawyers will be forced to turn over the information they had about Hogan as part of Koh’s inquiry.

Summary: Microsoft’s Surface tablet is an interesting piece of hardware, but the heavy emphasis on the smart cover keyboard has the potential to steer Microsoft’s tablet aspirations into the tar pits.

Microsoft has outlined details of its Surface tablet, unveiling pricing, market availability, and even putting a limited number up for pre-order. While I find the hardware interesting to say the least, what I find even more interesting is Microsoft’s insistence on pushing a keyboard with the device.

Should a tablet need a keyboard?

I use tablets a lot. I’ve written tens of thousands of words on my iPad without the need for a physical keyboard. I find that I can do everything that I want to do just fine using the on-screen virtual keyboard. I have a separate keyboard, a nifty Apple wireless one, but it’s something that I rarely use. If I’m going to carry a tablet and a keyboard with me then I might as well take my notebook with me instead. And while I’m at it, I may as well bundle in a mouse to the notebook so it feels like my desktop PC.

Others disagree with me. ZDNet’s James Kendrick, mobile tech guru and a regular tablet user, relies heavily on separate keyboards. Kendrick believes that Apple should go as far as to design a thin smart cover for the iPad complete with integrated keyboard.

I disagree.

While I have no objections to the idea of keyboards existing for tablets, the problem with pushing them too heavily as a bundle with a tablet is that it gives the impression that keyboards are required, as opposed to being only an accessory that some people might be interested in considering. By showcasing Surface tablets with keyboards Microsoft is in danger of steering the hardware into the tar pits on a number of fronts.

Price

While surface tablets start at a reasonable $499, that Touch Cover that’s seen in most of the product shots adds an extra $120 to the bottom line. The hard Type Cover is an extra $130. Not only are these keyboards expensive — Apple’s wireless keyboard is only $70 — it pushes the whole bundle to $620, which is anything but cheap.

Does that keyboard really justify the $120 price tag, or is Microsoft charging a premium for the keyboard/cover? A keyboard that costs one-fifth of the price of the tablet feels very steep to me and will no doubt others.

A $499 tablet might just be cheap enough to be an impulse buy, but factoring in whether they need that keyboard or not could be enough to put them off pulling the trigger on a Surface.

Heavy emphasis on the keyboard will make people nervous about Windows 8

Microsoft has built the Windows 8 interface with touch in mind. The idea is that the operating system is ready for tablets and touch.

Then why they keyboard?

Again, I can understand a keyboard appealing to some, but it doesn’t feel right that it is a core feature pushed by Microsoft. Either Windows 8 is touch-ready, in which people can do what they want to do on a Windows 8 or Windows RT-powered tablet without a keyboard, or it’s not. And remember, that keyboard also features a touchpad, doubling as a mouse. That should make buyers — both consumer and enterprise users — nervous about just how ready for touch Windows 8–Windows RT actually is.

The stark reality is that you shouldn’t need a keyboard for your tablet, let alone a $120 keyboard.

Keyboard seems like the main differentiator, but Surface doesn’t ship with it

If they keyboard is one of the core features of the Surface tablet, then why not ship one with each system? Selling the Touch Cover as part of all the Surface bundles — as opposed to just the 64GB model — would reduce the overall cost of the accessory.

Deciding whether to go for that keyboard or not could make people stop and think about their Surface purchase, as opposed to buying the tablet and then deciding whether they need a keyboard or not.

The key to successful selling is making the decision to buy as simple as possible. Look at how Apple sells the iPad — Choose whether you want Wi-Fi or Wi-Fi and cellular, then pick a storage capacity.

Simple.

That’s how Surface should be sold.

UPDATE: A Microsoft spokesperson has clarified the situation, pointing out that there are three different models, available, two of which come with the Touch Case.

a 32GB version priced at US$499,

a 32GB version bundled with a black Touch Cover priced at US$599,

and a 64GB version bundled with a black Touch Cover priced at US$699.

Windows 8, I want to love you, but your annoying quirks keep bringing me down.

After spending more than a year conquering the operating system’s overhauled (and nonintuitive) interface in its various prerelease iterations, I’ve now entered a second stage of frustration: I find myself cursing at Windows 8′s major changes less and less, but shaking my fist and swearing like a sailor at its little irritations more and more.

Beyond its polished, tile-based surface, Microsoft’s new operating system plays host to a legion of smaller annoyances—a cornucopia of quirks that will leave you seething long after you get the hang of all the new gesture controls and schizophrenic system options. Some of the problems are whoppers. Others are mere nitpicks that result from a lifetime of traditional Windows use. But many of these problems can be fixed, with one major exception. Read on!

Lock down the lock screen

Disabling the lock screen is but a hidden option away.

Let’s start at the very beginning of the Windows 8 experience. Lock screens make sense on a tablet, but on a PC the lock screen becomes just another superfluous click in a sea of nonstreamlined Windows 8 controls. Fortunately, banishing the Windows 8 lock screen from your life is easy.

Open the Run command box by searching for “Run,” pressing Windows-R, or moving your mouse pointer to the lower-left corner of the Desktop screen, right-clicking, and selecting Run in the Quick Access menu.

Now type
gpedit.msc
and press Enter to open the Local Group Policy Editor. Navigate to Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Control Panel >Personalization in the left menu. Double-click the Do Not Display the Lock Screen option in the main pane to open a new window. Select the Enabled radio button, click OK, and you’re done. Buh-bye, lock screen!

Press Start to continue

Enough words have been written about Windows 8′s missing Start button to fill the Library of Congress twice over, so I won’t spend much time on it. But if you’re looking to bring back the Start button and possibly even banish the live-tiled Start screen for good, check out the free (and awesome) Classic Shell program. We cover it in-depth in our roundup of free tools designed to bend Windows 8 to your will.

No POP for you!

That POP option in the Mail app? It’s a trick.

One of my biggest Windows 8 irritations is its lack of POP email support in the native Mail app. I get it, Microsoft: IMAP’s syncing functionality fits better into the cloud-connected, work-everywhere vision you have for Windows 8. But tell that to all the nontechie people who lean on me for computer support, and who rely on the POP email addresses that their ISPs handed out.

If you’re running Windows 8 and need to keep tabs on a POP email account, I first recommend downloading Mozilla’s free Thunderbird email application and using it in Desktop mode. But if you don’t want to do that (or if you’re running Windows RT), you have a workaround for Microsoft’s POP reluctance, though it’s somewhat clunky.

The key lies in the Mail app’s support for popular webmail clients, including Gmail and Outlook.com—two free favorites that just happen to be able to connect and link with outside POP email accounts. See where I’m going here? Just create a free email account with either service, and then link your POP mail account to it using the tutorials supplied by Outlook.com or Gmail.

After persuading your POP account to play nice with your Outlook.com or Gmail account, add your chosen webmail service to the Windows 8 Mail app through the normal means. Voilà! Your POP mail will work its way into the Mail app inbox by way of its webmail proxy.

Here’s the kicker: When you send email, the Mail app will let you use only your webmail email address, not your POP mail address. There isn’t any way around the limitation, but at least your messages will land in your inbox.

No DVD playback? No problem!

VLC’s myriad media options include full DVD playback.

Windows 8 still includes Windows Media Player, but the new version of the program lacks DVD playback support. If you’ve yet to take the plunge into a digital-only lifestyle, you could spring for Windows 8 Pro and the optional $10 Media Center Pack (which Microsoft is giving away free to upgraders until January 31, 2013). This is one solution, but I recommend downloading the free and flexible VLC instead.

VLC isn’t as polished as Microsoft’s Media Center software, but it’s jam-packed with utility, offering full DVD playback and ripping support, robust file-transcoding options, the ability to tune in to Internet videos and podcasts alike, and even spotty Blu-ray support if you enlist the help of add-ons with questionable legality. Our guide to mastering VLC will get you up and watching in no time—and for no money.

Just what do you think you’re doing, Dave?

The Recycle Bin properties screen.

Unlike HAL (and Windows 7), Windows 8 isn’t pleading or pushy when you want to get rid of a file. Deleting something sends the item straight to the Recycle Bin, no confirmations necessary. Ironically, this may be the one case when you can perform a task in fewer clicks than you could in previous iterations of Windows. That said, the old-style confirmation prompt has saved me from errantly deleting something important on more than one occasion.

If you want to bring back the warning, right-click the Recycle Bin and select Properties. Simply check the Display delete confirmation dialog box in the new window, click OK, and you’re good to go. Getting rid of the option is as easy as removing the checkmark once again.

Forget the Bing app

Skip the Bing app, and pin the Bing website instead.

I’m a Google fanatic, but when I’m tooling around in Windows 8′s Start screen on a touchscreen device, I find that the Bing search app’s picture-heavy aesthetic fits very nicely with Windows 8′s Modern design. Like many Modern-style apps, however, the Bing app includes an irritating quirk: Selecting a search result pops you out of the Bing app and opens the page in Internet Explorer. It’s a mild annoyance in the grand scheme of things, but it still drives me nuts.

You can have your attractive cake and eat it too by pinning the Bing.com website to the Start screen. Head to Bing.com, click the Pin This Site icon in the toolbar, and then select Pin to Start. Annoyance averted.

Higher resolution, lower readability

Desktop image sizing options: Not just for the hard-of-seeing.

Windows 8 has spurred a whole new hardware type: the laptop-tablet hybrid. Many of these devices sport 1080p IPS displays that are breathtaking to behold. I’ve had the opportunity to test a few hybrids extensively, and I’ve found that the blessing of a high-resolution display comes with an accompanying curse.

Many convertibles stick to an Ultrabook-type form factor, squeezing that 1080p resolution into a 10- to 12-inch screen. The ultrapacked pixel density makes for a razor-sharp picture, but text appears a bit too small for my taste in desktop mode. Fortunately, a trick that helped farsighted folks browse with ease in Windows 7 still applies in Windows 8.

Right-click anywhere on the desktop, select Screen Resolution, and then click Make text and other items larger and smaller. The Change the size of all items option works great if you plan on sticking to a touchscreen interface, boosting the size of icons and text alike to make them finger-friendly. I prefer using the Change only the text size option on hybrid-type devices that include a touchpad or mouse, however. The drop-down menu includes a bevy of text types, each of which you can individually alter to suit your particular needs.

The one that got away

That’s the avatar face of anger.

Unfortunately, Windows 8′s single-most oppressive annoyance can’t be fixed by minor tweaks, or—as I was told after spending hours on the phone with multiple support representatives—by Microsoft itself.

I’m a huge proponent of the system’s ability to transfer basic settings and files between multiple computers with the help of a cloud-connected Microsoft Account. I’ve accumulated several Microsoft Accounts over the years, however. One exists solely to maintain my Xbox Live gamertag, with more than six years’ worth of achievements, Microsoft points, and associated purchases tied to it. Another Microsoft Account plays host to my grandfathered 25GB SkyDrive account, and all the files inside. I rely on a third as my primary Microsoft Account login.

There is no way to merge the multiple accounts into a single, comprehensive Microsoft Account.

The aforementioned support calls proved unhelpful in clearing up the issue. Taking to the Internet, I found this July 2012 forum post by a Microsoft representative stating that the company has no plans to introduce an account-merging option. “I think it would be a nice feature, but it was repeatedly assessed as too costly compared to other needs,” he said.

That sucks for a long-term Microsoft fan like myself, especially since I jump from computer to computer frequently. I’ve resigned myself to the fact that I need to juggle three separate Microsoft Accounts in order to keep full functionality. Signing out of my main account and back in with my secondary accounts on the SkyDrive and Games apps doesn’t take long, but it’s frustrating, all the more so because I won’t have any way to fix this particular irritation at any time in the foreseeable future.

Ah, well. You can’t win ‘em all, I guess.

This is the time of year when friends, family members, casual acquaintances, and people in the street stop me to ask about buying a new PC.

“What should I get?” they ask. “What do I need?” Also heard with increasing frequency: “Should I get a tablet instead of a laptop?”

Loaded questions, to be sure, but not difficult ones. A tablet can take the place of a laptop if all you do is browse the Web and read e-mail. If you need to get any serious work done, whether for school or business or just everyday life, a laptop is still the smarter choice. It gives you a keyboard, a bigger screen, copious amounts of storage, and compatibility with all your favorite software.

So, what kind of laptop should you get, and with what specs and features? I can make this really simple:

1. Get at least 4GB of RAM.

That’s “four gigabytes of memory” for those who don’t speak PC. Anything less and your system will run like molasses–something to keep in mind as Black Friday deals roll around. Many “doorbuster” laptops will have only 2GB of RAM, and that’s just not enough.

2. If you can afford it, get a system with an SSD.

That’s short for “solid-state drive,” which has no moving parts and therefore runs faster, generates less heat, and consumes less power than a traditional hard drive. You’ll pay a premium for an SSD and end up with less storage space, but how much do you really need? Most folks I know rarely fill up more than 100GB.

Indeed, although a 128GB SSD may seem like a downgrade compared with, say, a 500GB hard drive, the speed benefits alone are worth the extra money.

3. Try before you buy.

Although brick-and-mortar tech stores are few and far between these days, there are still places where you can go and browse laptops in person. And that’s something you should definitely do.

Sure, you can shop online based on specs and price, but you owe it to yourself to test-drive the keyboard. And the trackpad. Make sure they’re comfortable and responsive. Likewise, check the screen: is it glossy and therefore heavy on the glare? Whenever possible, try to lay hands on a laptop before buying it.

One more “rule.”

Notice that I didn’t mention the procesor. Unless you’re doing heavy-duty video editing or playing a lot of graphics-intensive games, the processor just isn’t the big factor it used to be. They’re all pretty fast nowadays.

As for brands, I have similar feelings: they’re all pretty good nowadays. That said, it’s always a good idea to do your homework, starting with PC World’s Reliability and Satisfaction surveys.

What other advice would you give to someone shopping for a new laptop?

We like cameras. We also like taking cameras apart. Today, we vivisect the D600.

With the release of a “budget” full-frame camera, Nikon hopes to lure the mid-level/Prosumer camera junkies into taking the plunge into full-frame wonderland. Unfortunately, a “budget” full-frame camera still means a price tag of $2,099, so it’s not exactly a bargain.

Can’t get enough of the sweet, sultry taste of teardowns?

Entry level + full-frame = Nikon D600. Let’s see what it’s got.

24.3 megapixel FX full-frame CMOS sensor

5.5 frames per second continuous shooting

ISO 100-6400 (expandable to 25,600)

3.2″ TFT LCD

Dual SD card slots

Full-frame? What does that mean, you ask? Simply put, a full-frame sensor is the same size as a 35 mm (36×24 mm) film negative. A larger sensor means larger images with greater resolution, even when blown up to large print sizes.

Before we go any further, we’d like to give a big thanks to Chipworks for helping us with the teardown, and for providing the awesome sensor images you’ll see below.

Before we take a look inside the D600, let’s take a look at its port side, aptly located on the port side of the camera.

Headphone jack

Stereo microphone Input

Hi-speed USB

HDMI output: Type C mini-pin HDMI connector

Starboard, ho! Unlike the D800 and the D4, which feature CompactFlash and XQD card slots, respectively, the D600 sports dual SD card slots.

Even though SD cards are not as fast as CompactFlash or XQD modules, they are significantly smaller and lighter, allowing Nikon’s engineers to keep the D600′s exterior dimensions in check.

Oooh là là! The exposure mode selection dial atop the D600 has a lock button in its center. Say ‘so long’ to accidental dial turns!

If you’re used to wielding a Nikon D7000, holding a D600 may start to feel like déjà vu. Let’s compare the two and see how similar they really are.

Even without the different exterior markings, distinguishing the D600 from the D7000 is pretty easy once the body cap is removed, exposing the comparatively gigantic viewfinder mirror.

A shot of the camera controls reveals very similar button counts, button locations, and button functions.

The D600 seems to have a slight size advantage, but how slight is “slight?”

Check out this shot of what appears to be the D7000 by itself. Look closer, though, and you will notice that the D600 hides quite nicely behind the similarly sized D7000. Apparently “slight” really is slight!

Do not get the two cameras confused, though. They may look simlar on the outside, but the full-frame sensor in the D600 will certainly raise the bar as far as photo quality goes.

“Safety first!” That’s our motto!

Before we pull this bad boy apart, we remove the battery and battery cover from the device.

Yay! Instructional pictures! In true Ikea fashion, Nikon includes a helpful battery installation graphic.

Nikon claims that the 7.0V-1900mAh-14Wh Lithium-ion battery can take 900 shots per charge, an understandable downgrade from the 1,050 of the D7000, most likely due to the improved internals.

It seems that Nikon likes to wait a while to design new batteries. When the D90 debuted in 2008, it used the same battery as its predecessor, the D80. Likewise, the D600 uses the same battery as the D7000.

Poof! Like magic, the screws are released and we gain our first glimpse of the D600′s insides.

The only goodie on the underside of the bottom case is the battery release mechanism. If—for whatever reason—yours fails, it can be replaced pretty easily.

As we continue to remove parts, we get to the standard tripod mount, held in securely by four Phillips #00 screws.

It’s nice to see that this mount comes out separately from the rest of the body. It would be a shame to compromise a $2,100 camera just because the tripod mount becomes cross-threaded.

The rear cover (along with the LCD assembly) finally gives in and jumps ship from the rest of the body.

Well, this is nifty. Notice the red dots drawn on the inside of the rear cover? Each dot seems to correspond to the location of a screw. We assume this is done to keep track of each screw during the manufacturing process.

Every button on the rear cover is tied to a single ribbon cable. This makes repair a bit more costly if a single switch gets fried.

We were disappointed to find that the LCD is fused to the rear case, and cannot be replaced without replacing the entire panel.

If you scratch or crack the display glass on an older Nikon DSLR like the D90, it’s possible to find an inexpensive replacement and fix it yourself. With the inseparable glass, though, D600 users will definitely want to opt for some type of screen protection.

By now we are rather adept at finding the hidden screws on this device. We locate and remove the two small screws securing the top case assembly in place.

Anyone else keeping track? By our count, removing all of the outer case components requires unscrewing a total of 36 screws. And we’re just getting started…

It’s time for an iFixit fun fact! See the red square in the first picture? That circle with a line through it denotes the location of the image plane, which is the vertical plane that the image sensor lies in. You’ll find the same symbol on most cameras, and it’s the point where camera lens minimum focusing distance measurements are taken from.

Under the board lay a few more goodies, the first of which is the upper LCD assembly.

At this point we’d like to stop and let you appreciate the space management that goes into designing a DSLR camera. Wires and ribbon cables run amuck, yet everything works together in perfect harmony, allowing you to express your artistic vision with the press of a button.

EMI shields are very helpful. They work wonders in preventing external electromagnetic induction and radiation from messing with the circuitry of electronics.

That being said, they’re usually a huge pain in the spudger to remove.

Luckily, this large EMI shield is removed by simply unscrewing some Phillips screws, and does not require any desoldering.

The large square of thermal compound also tips us off that this shield works double duty as a heat sink, removing any excess heat from the D600′s motherboard.

Ever wondered what a corner view of the image sensor magnified 350x with a Scanning Electron Microscope looks like? Wonder no more. Can’t get enough magnification? Here is a view magnified at 3500x.

These tilted images show the micro-lenses making up each pixel of the full frame sensor.

The second image shows that these pixels are well-spaced, demonstrating why not all pixels are created equal. The large size and ample gaps between pixels allows room for metal signal lines to move each pixel’s data without blocking light to the individual photocathode sensors.

Interesting enough, the image sensor in the D600 is manufactured by Sony.

If there’s such a thing as a connector-to-circuit-board-area ratio, the D600′s primary power board has an impressive one.

A spudger makes quick work of the non-soldered connections, and the primary power board is free.

This is the point in the teardown when stuff just starts coming out of the device left and right. A lens mount here, a ribbon cable there, whatever that is over there… the only thing that could make this better is if it was made into an awesome montage and set to “You’re the Best,” à la Karate Kid.

We were relieved to find an insulated rubber cover on the beefy 350 µF flash capacitor, protecting us against what could have been a dangerous shock.

Just in case it wasn’t so welcoming, we were ready with our capacitor discharge tool—always a good idea when you’re dealing with large electrolytic capacitors.

Nikon D600 Repairability Score: 2 out of 10 (10 is easiest to repair)

The battery can be easily replaced by opening the compartment with your thumbnail.

The tripod mount comes off after removing four Phillips #00 screws.

The D600 has several wires that need to be desoldered in order to take it apart.

Many, many screws hold the device together.

The LCD is fused to the rear case, and cannot be swapped without replacing the entire back of the camera.

For absolute safety, you need to discharge the flash capacitor, otherwise you risk accidentally killing your camera (or yourself).

Intel’s Itanium processor launches are few and far between given that only so many need its specialized grunt, but that just makes any refresh so much larger — and its new Itanium 9500 certainly exemplifies that kind of jump. The chip centers around much more up-to-date, 32-nanometer Poulson architecture that doubles the cores to eight, hikes the interconnect speeds and supports as much as 2TB of RAM for very (very, very) large tasks. With the help of an error-resistant buffer, Intel sees the 9500 being as much as 2.4 times faster as the Tukwila-era design it’s replacing. The new Itanium also ramps the clock speeds to a relatively brisk 1.73GHz to 2.53GHz, although there will be definite costs for server builders wanting to move up: the shipping roster starts at $1,350 per chip in bulk and climbs to an eye-watering $4,650 for the fastest example.

Anyone worried that Poulson might be the end of the road for Intel’s EPIC-based platform will also be glad to get a brief reminder that Itanium will soldier on. The next iteration, nicknamed Kittson, will be framed around a modular design that shares traces of silicon and the processor socket with the more familiar Xeon E7. Intel casts it as a pragmatic step that narrows its server-oriented processors down to a common motherboard and should be cheaper to make. It’s likely that we’ll have to be very patient for more details on Kittson knowing the long intervals between Itanium revamps, but fence-sitting IT pros may just be glad that they won’t have to consider jumping ship for awhile yet.
